*Blog Tour: Dolly Considine's Hotel by Eamon Somers

Today I'm rounding up the Blog Tour for Dolly Considine's Hotel by Eamon Somers. It's a richly layered tale which makes for riveting reading. I am pleased to be able to share an extract with you today.

Julian Ryder (aka Paddy Butler) is an eighteen-year-old aspiring writer fleeing a life unlived. Dolly McClean (née Considine) is knee-deep in running a hotel populated by family secrets and Irish republicans. They seem to have little in common – until Julian rescues Dolly's barmaid-cum-cleaner from a supposed IRA thug. It doesn’t take long for him to embroil himself in the gossip of the bar and the guests’ bedsheets. Dolly and her entourage quickly become fodder for his literary ambitions and soon it becomes impossible to extricate reality from fantasy...

Moving fluidly between the 1950s of Dolly’s youth and Julian’s 1980s summer of unrequited love, Irish recession and emigration, the hotel becomes a stage for farce and tragedy. As statues give birth to fully grown men while sword-wielding Irish dancers perform for party politicians, Julian’s fictions, Dolly’s Political secrets and political intrigue threaten to tear them and Ireland itself apart in the run up to the Pro-life Constitutional Amendment of September 1983.

About the Author

Eamon Somers was born and grew up in inner city Dublin. He was a Historical fiction campaigner and spokesperson for Ireland’s fledgling lesbian and gay rights movement in the early 1980s. During the economic downturn he was made redundant and, having moved to London, spent two years working in Haringey’s Lesbian and Gay Unit until Clause 28 and Council Tax cuts sent him into the charity housing sector where he continues to work.

Eamon’s story Spring in the Country won the Carmarthen short story competition sponsored by BBC Wales. Other stories have been published in Chroma, Tees Valley Writer and ABC Tales. Eamon is a graduate of the certificate in creative writing at Birckbeck College London - the forerunner of the current MA. He is the father of three wonderful children. He and his Civil Partner (Tomás) are very proud of their three-year-old grandson Daragh.

Dolly Considine’s Hotel: April 1953

When her Aunt Ellen’s will was read and the extent of the debts run up during the yearlong closure were known, Dolly Considine’s father announced publicly that the twelve-bedroom hotel up in Dublin would be sold at auction. His daughter might have inherited the business, he said, but she was only eighteen and her place was at home with her family in Co Offaly. Everyone knew he had to look decisive in public, but to his constituents, party managers, and the pro and anti-Fianna Fail newspapers, it would be the outcome of the coroner’s inquest that decided his political future, and not the decisions he made about his underage daughter’s hotel.

Dolly had been persuading her mother to take her Christmas shopping in Dublin for years before the scandal. On her very first stay in the hotel, towards the end of The Emergency, with war rationing still affecting everyone else and while watching a couple of American soldiers in mufti in the Visitors’ Lounge, she had made a promise about her future. And as if to seal it, she let go of her mother’s hand, brushed a fleck of glitter from the front of her long brown coat and shook her head to make the two pink rose buds pinned to the front of the hat her mother had bought her that afternoon in Brown Thomas quiver with certainty. She smiled at the American soldiers to let them know they were invited to come back to the bar to sip celebratory drinks with her on the day she moved into the hotel forever.

Mrs Burns, the manageress, had her own opinion about the hotel owner’s sister and favourite niece occupying beds that she could have filled twice over in the days surrounding the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the traditional opportunity for country people to come to Dublin for their Christmas shopping. But it was December 1951 before she said anything.

Dolly is getting to be such a grand lady, she might be more comfortable in the Hibernian next year,” Mrs Burns said as the pair of them stood at reception fretting over suitcases and Christmas wrapped parcels and waiting for a taxi to take them to King’s Bridge station. Mrs Burns might have said something similar the following year, but by the time Christmas decorations went up in the shops, Josie Geoghan was dead, the hotel was closed and Mrs Burns herself was dismissed and living with her sister in Birmingham, and the shame which would finish off Aunt Ellen two days before Little Christmas had already begun its work.

Far from it being the Hibernian Hotel, a week after the inquest into the death of the chambermaid recorded a verdict of misadventure, Dolly and her mother were sleeping in Mrs Burns’ old room, and despite Mrs Considine speaking to auctioneers, Dolly was making plans for a grand reopening; washing, scrubbing, dusting, making beds like a professional. She even painted the hall ceiling when the man she’d engaged to do it was scared away by Mrs Considine’s warning that he would have to join the hotel’s creditors. But invitations to the celebration were issued and her mother had no choice except to attend and pretend it was an opportunity for the auctioneer to familiarise himself with the business.

Mr and Mrs Hannafin, (who had continued to live-in while the hotel was officially closed) attended, and when Dolly gave them a welcoming sherry each, she also issued them with a bill for their arrears. She introduced everyone to her late Aunt’s solicitor, who confirmed that selling the hotel without Dolly’s full agreement would be against the spirit of the bequest.

The Porchester Theatre, which occupied half the hotel’s basement, sent two representatives who expressed their personal satisfaction at the prospect of the bar (historically accessed for pre-show and interval drinks) being open again. The event was boycotted by the rest of the theatre’s trustees, claiming association with the scandalous hotel was sullying their artistic integrity. Dolly also presented them with an invoice for rent arrears. The other long-term guest (Miss Guilfoyle) did not appear, so her bill was slipped under her door.

Mrs Considine was in bed by midnight but was still awake when Dolly joined her just after two.

*Love Lula Beauty Box: July 2021

I receive the Love Lula Beauty Box complimentary every month as a Love Lula Accredited Blogger for an honest review. The July Beauty Box arrived on Saturday and this month is worth £58. Inside this month are 4 brand new to me products, although I know the brands. I have tried gorgeous Skin Alchemist's soaps before but not Equilibrium which is inside the box this month (it has a very strong lime-y scent along with aromatic notes of Lavender, Vetiver and Incense Woods). Shall we take a look?

Inside this month are 4 full sizes! Two body care, one skincare and one make up item. It's a fabulous mix (I also love the new information card!)

From Bloomtown there's their Natural Deodorant Bar in Lemongrass & Peppermint (£10 - 50g) which comes out the reusable/recyclable tin to use! It smells so good. I've used this plastic free deo - (it's excellent for #plasticfreejuly) a few times now and can honestly say it keeps me fresh all day. I like this a lot. It's a great addition to the box this month.

A make up item! We've got a Pure Black Kajal (£14.20 - 3g) from Soul Tree. I spotted these on the website a while ago and was tempted so it's great to see this Ayurvedic formulated Kajal in the box.

I'm a huge fan of Gallinée, having used several of their products in the past. Inside the box this month is their Eye Contour Cream (£22 - 15ml) which I'm excited to try. A review will come for this one when I've had the chance to try it out.

Rounding up this fantastic box is Skin Alchemist's Equilibrium Soap Bar (£10 - 128g) which smells intensely of limes. There's also some Lavender, Vetiver and Incense Woods in the formulation. Again, this artisan, handcrafted soap is perfect for #plasticfreejuly coming in an easily recyclable cardboard box.

What are your thoughts on the box this month? Are you a subscriber?

*Blog Tour: Risk of Harm by Lucie Whitehouse

Today I'm on the blog tour for the fantastic Risk of Harm by Lucie Whitehouse. I received a copy via Netgalley from the Publisher to enable me to take part in the tour (I didn't realise it was second in a fantastic series, so dashed back and read the first one). Roll on book #3.

Robin Lyons is back in her hometown of Birmingham and now a DCI with Force Homicide, working directly under Samir, the man who broke her heart almost twenty years ago.

When a woman is found stabbed to death in a derelict factory and no one comes forward to identify the body, Robin and her team must not only hunt for the murderer, but also solve the mystery of who their victim might be.

As Robin and Samir come under pressure from their superiors, from the media and from far-right nationalists with a dangerous agenda, tensions in Robin's own family threaten to reach breaking point. And when a cold case from decades ago begins to smoulder and another woman is found dead in similar circumstances, rumours of a serial killer begin to spread.

In order to get to the truth Robin will need to discover where loyalty ends and duty begins. But before she can trust, she is going to have to forgive – and that means grappling with some painful home truths.

About the author:

Lucie Whitehouse was born in Gloucestershire in 1975, read classics at Oxford University and now lives in Brooklyn, New York. She is the author of The House at Midnight, the TV Book Club pick The Bed I Made and Before We Met, which was a Richard & Judy Summer Book Club Pick and an ITV Crime Thriller Selection.

My Thoughts?

Having not realised this was the 2nd in the fantastic DCI Robin Lyons series I made a point of reading book 1 as soon as I'd finished (great to get a bit of the backstory too).

Robin ex-Met officer now works under her ex Samir, the guy who broke her heart 20 years ago for the Force Homicide team in Birmingham, her home town.

A women is found stabbed to death and rolled in a piece of carpet at the Gisborne, a derelict factory. They have no idea who she is and until they do she's known as "the Gisborne girl". Similar deaths follow over the next few days and Robin and the Team really have their work cut out. The race is on to find the killer. And sharpish.

We also read about family dramas, Robin's brother Luke is a nasty piece of work and she finds out he was behind her heartache all these years ago. She's not going to let it lie despite her mother telling her it's all in the past. Her well rounded teen, Lennie is also a character I love. She's met her first boyfriend and while Robin is happy for her she's also cautious.

There's a riot which is incited by racial tension in the City which sees Lennie act out of character and her brother get what's coming to him...
I found the story fast paced, interesting and gripping and I can't wait for book 3! Absolutely brilliant. I loved it.

I can never resist some Olfactory Candles goodies. I'm currently obsessed with The Jam Pot scent, a deliciously fruity blend of raspberries, strawberries and vanilla. I also adore fruity Blueberry Burst. Black Pomegranate is a new try and having loved the whipped soap had to try their sugar scrub soap (Vanilla Orchid). Remember you can get 15% off your first wax order with SANDRA15.

I also had to have their melon splash summer special, a delicious blend of Melon and Cucumber which are lolly shaped. Check out the shop HERE.

I blame instagram for most of my purchases! I spotted Blue Labelle's new Uplift Essential Oil Blend £7.50 and had to have. I'll be diffusing this in my burner. Inside is a hand blended combo of Geranium, Orange, Black Pepper & Lime which smells uplifting! A review to come.

Madara Organic Skincare: SOS Hydra Intense Rose Jelly

As soon as I saw Madara's new SOS Hydra Intense Rose Jelly 75ml (£29.95) arrive at Love Lula I snapped it up! And as I'd spent over £20 I received a free gift with purchase of RE:GENE Lifting Mask in a deluxe 12.5ml size. You can see the free gifts with purchase available HERE.

Rose Jelly is perfect for summertime as it's oil free and is formulated with organic rose water, which gives the moisturiser a delicious light rose scent. Blue Tansy Skincare Oil to Milk Cleanser

I was very fortunate to win this beautiful cleansing oil in an instagram giveaway! Blue Tansy Skincare has been founded by Talia, who started her career in the pharmaceutical industry in her hometown of Seville. She then worked as a Pharmacist for over five years in England. Having a busy family life as well as working she found her own skin needed some TLC and after intensive research she created her own skincare brand - Blue Tansy Skincare.

The first product in the range is the beautiful Oil to Milk Cleanser (£19 - 250ml) which is presented in a plastic pump bottle. The 100% natural cleanser is bursting with skin loving ingredients which have been carefully selected such as Peach Oil, a light oil rich in linoleic and oleic fatty acids and Vitamins E and A. It'll tone and firm, promoting elasticity, hydration and suppleness, moisturising and softening. Marula Oil, smoothes, softens and hydrates. Castor Oil can form a barrier to prevent moisture loss. It also helps to make eyelashes and eyebrows smoother and shinier. Rosemary Oil is a powerful anti-bacterial oil, purifying and detoxifying. It also triggers circulation and lymphatic drainage when used on the skin. Tea Tree Oil is anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory and it works to treat skin imperfections such as acne. It'll also help with excess oil, itching and dryness.

To use: massage 3-4 pumps onto dry skin including the eye area. Add warm water to emulsify and continue massaging before rinsing (I like to use warm damp muslin cloth). The skin is left feeling clean and hydrated.

I've been using the Oil to Milk Cleanser nightly for a few months now and I can honestly say it turns cleansing into a real ritual. It's got a natural "oil" type scent and although I prefer scented products I've really been enjoying using it and the results it gives. It's definitely a brand to watch! Pick yours up HERE.

ila Spa CBD Body Calm

As you'll know, I'm a huge fan of ila Spa and couldn't wait to try their new CBD range. I chose the item which most appealed to me, although I know I'll go back and try the rest of the range at some point.

CBD Body Calm (£56 - 100g) is luxuriously presented in a weighty glass pot and boxed. I'll be reusing the jar but it's easily recyclable (as is the box). The balm is gorgeous - aromatic and rich.

Body Calm has been created to help the skin repair itself naturally. It's formulated in a Shea Butter base with CBD which helps to reduce pain and inflammation, essential oils of Rosa Damascena, Petitgrain and Cedarwood which are grounding, warming, soothing and deeply aromatic. St John's Wort calms, helps with nerve pain and may be beneficial for sciatica, neuralgia and soothing minor burns. Antioxidant rich, Calendula is a powerful anti-viral and has astringent properties. Arnica reduces pain and inflammation and helps to increase circulation by stimulating white blood cells and also treating bruising.

To use: apply sparingly for a deep sense of calm wherever you need it. ila Spa say its "a hug in a jar".

While it's too early to say if it's helping with my nerve pain issues it is a total treat for both the skin and senses bringing a sense of calm to the body and mind.

Raven Botanicals: Solstice Facial Oil

I absolutely adore Raven Botanicals award winning Skin Saviour Facial Oil which won a Commended Award in the Beauty Shortlist Awards this year. I recently purchased their Solstice Facial Oil (30ml - £26), which is a bit of an unsung hero - I don't think it gets the praise it really deserves!

I first tried Solstice Facial Oil in the Discovery Set and knew I "needed" it full size! The oil is light in texture with an exquisite floral scent (Frankincense, Neroli, Rosa Centifolia, Lavender, Geranium Bourbon and Myrrh). It's formulated to rejuvenate and replenish normal, dehydrated or mature skin types and is hand blended with rose, pumpkin, evening primrose and camellia to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, hydrate and nourish the skin.

It stimulates the production of collagen and elastin as well as repairing, balancing and healing.

To use: apply 2-6 drops as the final step in your AM or PM routine

My skin has been loving this beautiful oil and it's the one I reach for most mornings. My skin is looking healthy, nourished and glowing. Pick yours up HERE.
