April Favourites

These are my five April favourites - the products I've found myself reaching for all month.

L'Oreal Nude Magique BB Cream (fair skin tone).  This comes out of the tube white!  It self adjusts to your skin tone giving you the perfect nude skin. I love it!  It's  great for days when you want a little bit of coverage.

Elemis Absolute Eye Serum - this is my No.1 eye care product.  Great for reducing dark circles.  It really works.

Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Lipstick in Boy - glossy colour which suits everyone, great for everyday use.  Super moisturising and such a pretty shade.

YSL Long-Lasting Waterproof Eyeliner in Shimmering Burgundy - a purple shade.  This eyeliner stays on all day.  I first discovered it in the Selfridges Advent Calendar (in black).

YSL Shocking Volume Mascara - this is a mini I got recently in the Harvey Nichols GWP.  Love it and will definitely purchase full size.

What are your favourites this month?  Have you used any of these?

April Books

The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey - a magical book.  The story starts in Alaska in 1920.  Jack & Mabel don't have any children, Mabel lost a child and it is a big regret in their lives.  During the first snowfall they build a snow girl complete with scarf and gloves.  In the morning it is gone.  They get glimpses of a blond haired girl running through the trees.  They slowly get to know the girl and care for her and take her into their hearts.  The story is based on a Russian fairytale.  A really great read.

Gang of One by Gary Mulgrew - a fascinating read.  Memoirs of Gary Mulgrew, one of the Natwest three who was extradited to America charged with wire fraud.  The story explains what happened to him and the other two accused.  He also writes about his early years and his family as well as terrifying prison life.

Then They Came For Me by Maziar Bahari - fascinating read about award winning journalist Maziar Bahari.  He was in Iran to cover the Presidential Election in June in 2009 for Newsweek magazine.  He was just expecting to be there a few days and then be back home to London to his pregnant fiancee but he is arrested and incarcerated under false charges of espionage in Evin, a State Prison known for oppression and torture.  Prison life is hard and he is interrogated on a regular basis.  Paola, his fiancee in London and his mother in Iran fought hard for his freedom.  He was released in October 2009.

Lost Angel by Mandasue Heller.  If you like Martina Cole, Kimberley Chambers and Jessie Keane you'll love this book.

Johnny Conroy meets Ruth Hynes before long they are married and Johnny becomes part of the Hynes family.  The Hynes family business is stealing cars.  The only good thing in his life is his daughter Angel who is innocent and nice.  She meets Ryan, an employee of Johnny's and they fall in love but the family secrets involve him too... A great easy read.

QVC Elemis Today's Special Value - this Sunday

Check out Sunday's Today's Special Value set! It looks fabulous!

Oh so so tempted!
.

April Empties

It's that time of the month again! Empties! I am a bit earlier with this post - I'm not going to use anything else up before the end of the month.

This is what I've got through this month and here are my thoughts:

Dr Nick Lowe Cooling Menthol Face Scrub 75ml - this is my all time favourite scrub and as soon as I see I'm running low I pick up another (or wait until Boots are doing their £5 off vouchers).  The best facial scrub I've ever used.

Sisley Sisleya Global Anti-Age Cream 2 x 5ml - got one in my Latest in Beauty box and one in a swap - gorgeous cream - but couldn't justify spending £243 on a full size pot so wouldn't buy.

Clarins Relax Bath & Shower Concentrate 100ml - one of my favourite relaxing bath products, it so soothes aching muscles, would purchase.  This was a generous GWP size.

Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream 30ml - this was from the Breast Cancer Gift Box in October.  One of my favourite face creams - I always come back to this one - light and refreshing on the skin and it works.

Avon Lagoon Liquid Soap 300ml -  a cheapie but love the scent.

RMK Cleansing Oil Sachet 3ml - love, love, love this oil.  will probably purchase at some point.  Scented with rose and mint - got three uses.

Chanel Hydramax+ Active Serum 5ml - nice to use and smelled good but probably not really suited to my skin type so wouldn't buy.

Neil George Intense Illuminating Conditioner 10ml sachet - loved this, will purchase at some point when I've used some hair products up.

Como Shambhala Invigorate Shower Gel 2 x 50ml - my new favourite, have already purchased full size and got a few in swaps.

Como Shambhala Invigorate Body Lotion 1 x 50ml - love this, got a few stocked up.

Balance Me Rose Otto Body Wash 125ml - love this delicious rose scented      Turkish delight wash.

Pure Fiji Body Butter - mini pot - lovely rich cream rather than a butter, lightly scented with coconut - love it.

Erno Laszlo Velvet Night Cream sachet - got two uses from this.  Lovely rich cream (got a few stocked up in swaps).

Erno Laszlo Instant Eye Repair sachets x 2 - got approx 5 uses per sachet.  Lovely eye cream but retails at £85 eek.

Erno Laszlo Morning Beauty Rescue/Intensive Porcelain Veil/Refresh Moisture Infusion - sachets - all lovely to use (and got a few more in swaps).  Wouldn't purchase anything from the range as its too expensive - but nice to try out.

G Baldwin & Co Harmonising Bath Oil 25ml - free gift with purchase.  Lovely scent and is reasonably priced so will probably purchase at some point.

Perricone MD Face Finishing Moisturiser 15ml - this was in my free Cult Beauty Gift - I am so in love with this moisturiser!  I definitely want to get this when I've used up the samples/trial sizes etc. from beauty boxes and other purchases.

Elemis Tranquil Touch Body Polish 50ml - lovely body scrub would consider re-purchasing.

Evolve Protein Build Conditioner - Dry/Damaged Hair 7ml sachet - received this in my April Amarya box - nice product, would perhaps purchase.

Age Definance Cleansing Wipes - sometimes only a wipe will do.  Try to use these now and again rather than everyday.  2 packs for £1 in Poundland.  Non-sting which is great.

Bamford Geranium Bath Oil 30ml x 2 - My favourite bath oil, I will eventually get round to buying this but still got a lot from swaps.

Molton Brown Vitalising AB&C Bath and Shower Gel 100ml - love the scent and the luxury of Molton Brown products.

Garnier Body Intensive 7 days Soothing Lotion 250ml - Calming Honey - love this budget body lotion it really does work.  Great light scent too.  I'd definitely re-purchase.

Spiezia Facial Cleanser 10ml - one of the best balm type cleansers.  Quite a herbal scent so takes a bit of getting used to but removes every last trace of waterproof mascara and eyeliner.

Radox Hand Wash 300ml - chamomile and jojoba oil - delicately scented would re-purchase.

No7 Wipes - got these in the Boots £5 off voucher deal - wouldn't re-purchase as at £7 expensive and I didn't think they worked as well as the cheaper ones.

Garnier Fresh Essentials Toner 200ml - normal/combination skin.  I got this half price at £1.50.  Good budget toner. Would re-purchase.

Clarins Extra Firming Body Cream 30ml - got this in a swap.  Nice enough cream (though prefer the lotion in this range).  Wouldn't purchase as I think there are nicer body creams out there.

What have you been using up this month?

Mini Sanctuary Haul

My sister-in-law gave me a Boots gift card for my birthday.  I needed some hand wash/lotion and as Sanctuary products were on 3 for 2 I got these.  Still got a tenner left on my gift card.

The Body Moisture Spray is my favourite for days I can't be bothered putting on body lotion.  Oops, another body moisture product to add to my huge collection.

What's your favourite Sanctuary product?

Tropic Skin Revive Firming Nourishing Cream

I received a teeny tiny pot of this in my April Joliebox.

Susan Ma (who starred in the Apprentice) is the creator of the range and you can read more about her here.  The online shop is here.

A 50ml tub of the cream retails at £15.95 on Joliebox and on the Tropic website it retails at £15.95 for a 30ml pump.

Suitable for all skin types apart from really oily.  Smells amazing and is a rich cream which melts into the skin.  I love it!

Packed full of goodies - rosehip, shea butter (to soften and hydrate) echinacea (improve elasticity and smooth fine lines) blueberries (revitalise and rejuvenate) raspberries, sea kelp (elasticity and fine lines), golden jojoba, Vitamin E, calendula, macadamia, frankincense, chamomile, aloe vera juice, lavender and geranium.

To use - warm a small amount in your hands and apply to face and neck.  If you are applying make up straight away wait a minute or two for the cream to absorb.  Can be used am or pm.

Only negative is the tiny pot as it doesn't really give you enough to really test it out for longer than a few days.   Have you tried this cream?  If so, what are your thoughts?

Estee Lauder Deluxe Gift With Purchase - Harvey Nichols

It's that time again! Harvey Nichols Estee Lauder Gift with purchase if you buy 2 or more items - one to be a moisturiser, eye care or repair serum.  So tempted!  It runs from 26th April - 12th May.

Included in the gift is Re-Nutriv Hydrating Creme Cleanser, a Re-Nutriv moisturiser (I think, its too wee to read exactly what it is), an eye shadow palette, a lippy, lipliner, mascara and gloss as well as a handbag and make up bag.  Do you think you'll be get the offer?

Balance Me Cleanse & Smooth Face Balm 15ml

I received this cleanser in my Joliebox this month and I love it!  It's 15ml so its an ideal try me size (retails at £20 for 125ml - includes muslin cloth and £4 for 15ml).

Suitable for normal to dry/sensitive skins but also suitable for all skin types.  I am normal/combination and my skin loves it.  It makes my skin look radiant and deeply cleansed.

It is 100% natural and contains anti-oxidant, Arctic cloudberry, oatmeal, chamomile, red mandarin, shea & cocoa butter, oils of rosehip, camellia, kukui nut and coconut.  It also contains essential fatty acids, vitamins and lipids.

For me, the scent is sherbet lemons - delicious!

I am already a huge lover of Balance Me products.

To use: warm a small amount in your hands and apply to a dry face and neck massaging it into the skin.  Remove with a warm muslin cloth.

Have you tried this product and what are your thoughts?

Persephone Books

I received my Persephone Biannually for Spring/Summer the other day.  Persephone Books are reprints of neglected books - both fiction and non-fiction.  Titles include novels, short stories, diaries and cookery books.  They have a dove grey jacket and include a bookmark.

You can buy online or order by phone or post.  (the Biannually comes with a free bookmark).

I've only bought two of these books so far -

No.6 - The Victorian Chaise-longue by Marghanita Laski - "Melly lies on a chaise-longe in the 1950s and wakes up as Milly eighty years before".  A interesting and a bit of a scary read!

No. 57 - Dimanche & Other Stories by Irène Némirovsky - short stories by the author of Suite Francais which were written between 1934 and 1942.

There are many more titles I want to read though.  Have you bought any of these books?  If so, which do your recommend?

Mini Gardening Update

Spent about 7 hours at the plot over the weekend and I've finally got potatoes, strawberries, beetroot, carrot, red onion, horseradish, mustard and mixed salad leaves planted.  Still got loads more to plant - it all took a bit longer than I thought! (my bit is unfortunately not the raised bed!)  It's all coming together now though.

Body Brushing

I picked up this Elemental Herbology Exfoliating Mitt from Feel Unique when they had a 10% off day recently.

I bought it in preparation for my 10 day detox which I am planning on starting round about the 11th/12th May (once the diary dates for lunches, dinners and drinks are out the way!)  I was inspired by Gail who is detoxing at the moment and you can read her blog here.

The mitt is made from 100% sisal fibres.

Dry body brushing helps stimulate your circulation to help eliminate toxins and it also helps to reduce cellulite. It also sheds dead skin cells and helps to improve the texture of the skin leaving it soft, smooth and radiant.

Use before going in the shower - brush in vigorous upward strokes starting from the soles of your feet and working towards the heart.  Concentrate on problem areas such as thighs, hips and tummy.

I used this yesterday morning for the first time - its quite a strange sensation brushing your body - but I'm going to keep at it and I'll update my thoughts on it - it only takes a few minutes and every little helps! x

Balance Me

Balance Me was founded in 2005 by two sister, Rebecca and Clare Hopkins who started the company from home after spotting a gap in the market for affordable, good quality and luxe aromatherapy bath and body products (and now skincare).

Sian Jones, a qualified aromatherapist joined the sisters early on and her knowledge of retail has been invaluable.  The range is available in John Lewis, Waitrose, QVC, Wholefoods, Latest in Beauty, Naturisimo and via their own website.

The Super Moisturising Hand Cream and Exfoliating Polish have both won Anti-Ageing Beauty Bible Awards.

The products are free from parabens, petroleum, sulphates, mineral oils, silicones, artificial fragrances and colours.

Products are available for face, body and hair and include gift sets and travel minis.

My current favourites are:

Pure Skin Face Wash (I got a trial size from Latest in Beauty from their luxury samples range).  It retails at £16 for 125ml.  It's got a lovely orange scent and leaves the skin feeling soft with no feelings of any tightness.  It's one I'd buy full size.

My other loves is the Rose Otto Range - smells delicious like Turkish Delight.  My current favourites are the lip balm (currently selling at £2.40 with a 70% discount.  You can see it here. (unsure how long this discount price is lasting for though). I also love the Body Wash.

I want to try the body cream and Body Balm.  Do you use any of the Balance Me range?

Planet Soap

I first mentioned Planet Soap here.

Jill makes all the soaps herself in her workshop at home in the Lothians.

I first came across the soaps in a local gift shop.  You can also order online and a number of shops in Scotland stock Jill's soaps (you can see the list here).  Jill also sells her soaps at craft fairs and markets and you can see the calendar here for upcoming ones.

The soaps contain no animal products, parabens, detergents, surfactants, artificial colours or fragrance.  They are traditionally made Cold Process soaps.

"The soap is made by combining a particular proportion of fatty acids (in oils, nut butters or fat) with sodium hydroxide (lye).  This forms a chemical reaction called saponification.  The oils and lye react and become gentle soap".  Fascinating!  I'd love to watch the hand making process - Jill will do talks to groups about the soap, her love of essential oils, the joys and challenges of setting up a small craft business.  During the talk Jill will make a loaf of soap and can sell the soap afterwards to the audience (no charge for the talk & demonstration if everyone buys some soap!).

Essential oils are used to scent the soaps and plant roots, seeds and leaves are also used.  The cold process leaves glycerine in the bar making them moisturising on the skin.  The oils used are olive, ethically sourced palm and coconut oils.

I asked Jill a while ago if she could create a mint & fennel soap - Minted Fennel with Nettle Leaf.  It's gorgeous, with fennel essential oil and spearmint, the nettle leaves creates a nice scrubby soap.  Other favourites include: Lavender & Geranium and Lavender.  I want to try Spiced Orange, Peppermint & Lavender and Rosy Geranium.  You can see the whole range of soaps available here.

The soaps are wrapped in coloured paper and tied with raffia.  Ingredients are clear listed.  They cost cost £3.50 per bar and postage in the UK is £1.90 per bar and 70p for each additional bar.  If you want to order in bulk please use the contact form to arrange the shipping rate.

A little jute bag (see photo) is great for packaging gifts and retails at £1.50.

Check out the website here. (I'll be stocking up again soon!) x

Body Lotion Update

I first blogged about my body lotion spending ban here.  The following are the ones I have managed to use up so far and my thoughts on whether I'd buy again.

Nivea Pure & Natural Body Lotion - love this.  First blogged about it here.  One of my favourite cheaper lotions.  The second one in the photo is Laura Mercier Creme Brulee Souffle Body Creme which is gorgeous! Rich creamy and smells of sweet vanilla and sugar - one that's definitely going on my wishlist.

Elemis Pro-Collage Body Cream.  You can read my post here.  Another one I love! Would maybe get it again at a Harvey Nichols shopping evening when they offer a discount (their Spring party is approaching!)

Garnier Intensive 7 days Soothing Lotion - Calming Honey - another cheaper body lotion which I love!  Still got the mango version to use.  Would buy again.

I also have used a small 50ml size of Origins Ginger Souffle Whipped Body Cream (love) and the small Temple Spa Face and Body Balm (wouldn't purchase) Still got a long way to go on the body lotion challenge! (have also acquired a few more!)

Dinner at The Kitchin

We went or dinner on Saturday night to celebrate our 7th Wedding Anniversary (which is today) - time sure does fly!  We went to The Kitchin which is situated in Leith, Edinburgh.  It was fab!  We also went for the matching wines which really complemented the dishes (thanks mum & dad for the anniversary money!)

We went for the Tasting Menu - copy above. We had no idea what dishes we were getting until they arrived at the table! Highlights were Shellfish Rockpool - with octopus, mussel, shrimp, oyster, scallop, squat lobster and the freshest sweetest crab I have ever tasted.  It was topped with salmon caviar and served with a shellfish consommé.

Pig's Head & Scallop was another fab dish - one which I'd never have picked off a menu.  It consisted of boned and rolled pig's head, served with scallop and crispy ear salad (sounds vile but was delicious!)

The fish course was Hake seared and served with artichoke and carrot with wild garlic.  A simple dish but it was delicious.

Our main was veal sweetbreads with salsify, jerusalem artichoke and endive.  I was a bit scared when this dish was announced but it was really tasty and the sweetbreads melted in the mouth.

Finally to pudding! It was a trio of lemon - glazed lemon tart, lemon macaron and Crème fraîche sorbet.  A perfect light and fruity end to an amazing meal.

Pig's Head & Scallop (sorry for the poor photo I need to get saving for a better camera!)

Veal

We finished with espresso and petit fours.

Included was nougat, sea buckthorn macarons (sweet & sour and delicious), chocolate truffle and almond tart.

One of the highlights of the evening was meeting Tom Kitchin.  He came out to our table and shook our hands and had a chat.

The toilets had Miller Harris citron citron hand wash and lotion - very luxe!

A great dining experience and we were so lucky to meet Tom Kitchin. (I got a bit tongue tied and flustered!)

p.s. we went for a pre-dinner cocktail to Bond No.9.  Hubby had Gin Martini and I had The Witchery - Saffron Gin, mint, lemon, sugar and champagne.  You can see the cocktail list here.

Just Be Fresh Faced Facial

I went for a Just Be Fresh Faced Facial* on Friday at Blissbody.

Vicki Jeffrey is the Face & Body Therapist at balanced physiotherapy, situated at 1 St Bernard's Row in Edinburgh.  Vicki has a really nice little treatment room off the studio. (I didn't get a photo but will next time).

Vicki is very welcoming and makes you feel totally at ease.  A new client form is filled in and then it is onto the facial.

I was left to get undressed (down to underwear) and then slipped between the covers of the heated bed - ah bliss!  Gentle music, soft lighting and a Just Be Happy Treatment Candle scenting the room with pink grapefruit, lime and bergamot.

The treatment starts with your feet being washed and dried.  My hands were then massaged with warm wax from the treatment candle and then popped into cotton gloves. (my hands were so soft, smooth and moisturised at the end of the treatment).

I was asked to breathe in my oil (Just Be Happy) for feelings of calm and relaxation.

My eye make up was removed using a new product, Just Be Cleansed, Eye Make up Remover (£15 for 30ml) and then my face was cleansed with Just Be Cleansed, Cleaning Balm (I already use and love this product). The product is removed with a warm cloth.  Skin is then cleansed again using the new Just Be Cleansed, Cleansing Gel (£18.50 for 100ml) and again removed with a warm cloth.  The products are all scented with essential oils and smell amazing.

Skin is then toned with Just be Toned, Refreshing Toner which is scented with oils of basil and chamomile.

Exfoliation follows with Just Be Radiant, Gentle Exfoliator, another new product (£18.50 for 100ml). The exfoliator removed with a warm cloth.

A facial massage follows - one of the best facial massages I've ever had.  Afterwards skin was plumped up and looks so healthy.

A neck and shoulder massage is also incorporated in the facial using Just be Happy oil.

Next up was the mask.  These are for salon use only at the moment.  Both are a mix of kaolin clay and coconut milk powder which are freshly made up for each facial with a hydrating infusion.

Just be Clear Soothing Mask (White) - gentle clay mask to draw out impurities and to rejuvenate and refine skin - ideal for normal, dry, sensitive and mature skins.

Just be Clear Detox Mask (Green) - mineral rich clay which deeply purifies, tones and balances congested or oily skins.

Vicki used the detox mask on my oily T-zone and the soothing mask on my cheeks.  While the mask is drying an arm massage is given.  Mask is removed with warm cloths.

Just be Hydrated Serum is then applied followed by Just be Radiant Treatment Oil.  Finally, Just Be Radiant Restoring Cream which has built in sun protection is applied - this is a new product and is going on my wishlist! (£34.95 for 30ml).

The facial ends with Just be Soft Lip Balm being applied.  It is enriched with Vitamin E and Tea Tree and retails at £9.50 for 7ml.

A great facial, I recommend it! I felt really relaxed afterwards - I must have facials more often!  Vicki also does a range of other facials including - The Ultimate - Natural Face Lift Massage, Non Surgical Facelift Facial, Chocobeauty Anti-Ageing Facial (like the sound of this one!), Crystal Facial as well as Hot Stone Massage, Deep Tissue Massage and Mummy to be Massage to name a few.

I left with a Skin Care Prescription, a face map (my problem area was Jaw Line & Chin which corresponds with reproductive organs and colon. I am advised that hormonal or emotional stress can cause breakouts in this area and I should eat plenty of greens and drink lots of water).

Vicki also gave me a mini trial size of Just Be Radiant Treatment Oil.

Vicki can be contacted at by email at vicki@blissbody.co.uk and her website details are here.

Just Be online shop can be found here.

I went for a Just Be Anti-Ageing Facial in February and you can read the post here.
