March Books

Here's what I've been reading in March:

Trust No One (Mike Lockyer #3) by Clare Donoghue* - DI Mike Lockyer and newly back at work DS Jane Bennett are called to investigate a murder.

A divorced father of two is found dead in his bed. At first it looks like he died in his sleep but on closer inspection he's been murdered. His family, ex-wife and friends are questioned and his life is dissected with no stone being left unturned.

Fast paced with lots of twists and turns. I thought I knew who the killer was but just didn't see that ending coming! Loved it.

A Long Walk Home by Judith Tebbutt - In September 2011 Judith and her husband David were holidaying in Kenya. Part of their trip took them to a remote beach resort south of Somalia.

They were attacked by a gang of pirates and Jude was taken by them by sea and land to a village in the heart of Somalia.  What follows is an account of Judith's 192 days she's kept hostage - she is isolated, intimidated and starved of food and kindness.  To keep herself sane she walks circuits around her cell everyday walking to freedom. Her son Ollie is trying to raise the ransom money the pirates have requested.  It's a very moving story and Jude is one brave lady.

The Cradle will Fall by Clare Donoghue - this is a short story giving background about the characters in the DI Lockyer series. PC Jane Bennett is just starting her career in the force. She keeps a level head on a particularly gruesome case and catches the eye of DI Lockyer. He needs people like her on his team. An interesting short read.

Fragile Cord (DS Coupland Book 1) by Emma Salisbury - the story is set in Salford. Detectives Kevin Coupland and Alex Moreton are investigating what appears to be a murder suicide.

Devoted family man Ricky Wilson is stabbed following a night out.  Tracey Kavanagh has murdered her young son before taking her own life and that of her unborn child.  We find out that the two cases are connected. Fast paced with lots of twists and turns. Great read would recommend.

The Widow by Fiona Barton* - Jean Taylor has no worries. She lives in a nice house with a nice husband and works at the local hairdressers. Their only sorrow in life is that they were unable to have a family. Jean's life changes forever when her husband Glen is accused of abducting a child.

The story is told from different viewpoints - The Widow, The Reporter, The Detective and The Mother. Glen dies suddenly and Jean finds herself able to tell her own story.

Unputdownable, I was forever trying to guess who was guilty and who was innocent. I was a little bit disappointed with the ending but an enjoyable read nonetheless.

Tuesday Falling by S Williams - Tuesday has suffered extreme cruelty and heartbreak at the hands of men so she's taken it upon herself to help others who like her, have suffered attacks by men.

She lives beneath the city in the forgotten tunnels of the underground.  She's connected to a brutal attack on gang members on the tube and DCI Loss investigates with his partner and sidekick, Stone. Loss is still suffering the tragic death of his daughter who was murdered three years ago.  Tuesday seems to be connected to her.  A dark and violent but compelling read.

Shtum by Jem Lester* - this is the story of Ben and his wife Emma and their severely autistic son Jonah. It is a gripping tale which inspires, has funny moments, is difficult to read at times, is heartwarming and full of love and despair.

Ben and Emma are finding it hard to cope with Jonah and decide to appeal the decision by the local authority of placing him in a special residential school which they believe is best suited to Jonah's needs.

They decide to split up to try and help their case and Jonah and Ben move in with his dad Georg. This in itself is difficult as the two men have never seen eye to eye. For Ben he goes the full circle, finding out who he is and discovering family history which explains a lot.

When I wasn't reading the book I was thinking about it which is always the sign of a great read. One of my favourites this year. Highly recommend it.

The Silent Twin (Detective Jennifer Knight #3) by Caroline Mitchell* - Nine year old Abigail goes missing during a game of hide and seek with her twin Olivia. DC Jennifer Knight, from Operation Moonlight is drafted in to assist the family. Olivia has been mute since Abigail's disappearance.

The decaying, remote farmhouse is a place of secrets and ghosts. Abigail whispers to Jennifer pleading with her to find her. A fast paced story with lots of twists and turns and it keeps you guessing. I'd changed my mind several times throughout as to who had taken Abigail. A really brilliant read. The series keeps getting better and better. Highly recommend.

The Missing Hours by Emma Kavanagh* - Dr Selena Cole is in the nearby playpark with her daughters when she goes missing. Twenty hours later she's found with no recollection of where she's been.

A murder took place when she was missing and the police are trying to see if there's a connection.  The police team working on the investigation are brother and sister. I preferred Lee's chapters to that of her brother Finn.

We also learn more about the Cole family and their Kidnap & Ransom business with some chapters being case files. I found the book quite hard going at times (sadly, having loved Emma's previous books). There is however a twist at the end I didn't see coming.

What have you been reading this month?

The Little Health Company: COCO Hair Treatment

The Little Health Co recently sent me their COCO Hair Treatment* (£13.99 - 100ml) to review which is 100% natural.

The products (you can see the range HERE) are lovingly hand crafted in small batches and contain no synthetic ingredients. Ingredients are ethically and sustainably sourced and packaging is recyclable.

COCO Hair Treatment* is made with natural oils of extra Virgin Organic Coconut, Castor, Macadamia, Sweet Almond, Avocado and Vitamin E. It makes the hair so soft, healthy looking, helps to reduce frizz and nourishes the hair.

To use: massage into your hair from root to tip leaving on for 20 minutes or so (or overnight) before washing out.

I've been really impressed with how the hair treatment makes my hair look and feel. My only negative is I'd have preferred the product to have a natural essential oil scent rather than be unscented (this is just minor negative as the product really works).

Perfume Collection

I have quite a few perfume sample vials as you can see below!

Today I'm showing you my collection of perfumes - full size, travel size and rollerballs. I actually have quite a small collection (only 40). You can see what I had in my stash in January 2012 and in March last year.

The two that are the most expensive in my stash are Chanel's Sycomore EdT (when I bought it was £100 - 75ml). I love its woody, mossy and vertivert notes.  See my review HERE.

Tom Ford's Santal Blush EdP (£145 - 50ml) this is my third bottle! An absolute hug in a bottle. It has notes of sandalwood, cumin, fenugreek, cinnamon, rose, ylang ylang, jasmine, woods, benzoin and musk. I just love it. See my review HERE.

I've got a lot of love for Shay & Blue. I recently finished Watermelons which I loved. It will definitely be a re-purchase.  Currently in my collection is Framboise Noir* (REVIEW), Salt Caramel (mini Review) and Atropa Belladona (HERE). I've also got two mini sizes of Blood Oranges and Almond Cucumber.

I adore rose scents. I picked up the Jo Malone Tudor Rose 30ml at the great Perfume Society Rock the Ages event I went to last year - see HERE. Hubby listened to my hints and bought me the gorgeous Miller Harris Rose Silence EdP (50ml) for my Christmas. See my review HERE.

Aqua di Parma's Rosa Nobile EdP which I received last year for Christmas. It has notes of mandarin, bergamot, pepper, peony, violet, lily of the valley, Centifolia rose, cedarwood, ambergris and musk. It's a really pretty feminine scent.

I reviewed True Nature Botanicals solid perfume Noble Floral* and totally fell in love with it. With notes of Tuberose, Rose, Jasmine and Citrus. See my review HERE.

Diptyque's Eau Rose Roll on is a beautiful true rose perfume and has notes of bergamot, lychee and blackcurrant, damask and centifolia roses, with musk, cedar and honey.

I picked up Jo Loves White Rose & Lemon Leaves 30ml when in London last year. It really is exquisite. See my review HERE.

Lush's Imogen Rose solid perfume is a fairly light rose scent with rose and green notes. It doesn't really last long but it's a cute little scent.

I recently tried a sample of Escentric Molecules 01 and loved it. This is the 30ml travel size refill. The scent smells differently on everyone and two people (so far) have been enticed with it - one male, one female!

I'm a huge fan of lovely Gorse by Laboratory Perfumes (100ml) this one is beautiful. The gorse gives it a coconutty edge and this perfume smells differently on everyone as well! See my review HERE.

Estee Lauder's Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia EdP (30ml) another scent I first picked up in London before it was widely available. See my review HERE.

I've got a lot of love for Diptyque's Philosykos and have it in the rollerball oil and the EdT spray. It takes me back to hot summer days in Greece. The best and original fig scent. The EdP is on the wishlist.

My in-laws got me Angel for my birthday last year. I used to go through it by the gallon but hadn't worn it for a few years.

Abahna's Frangipani & Orange Blossom re-fillable spray is also a favourite. See my review HERE.

From the 4160Tuesdays Advent Calendar I totally fell for London 1969 (this little spray is nearly done so I'll definitely get full size) and Raw Silk & Red Roses both 9ml. See my review HERE.

Jo Malone Grapefruit Cologne (30ml) was the first scent I bought from Jo Malone. I like it paired with Lime, Basil & Mandarin body lotion.

Khiel's Nashi Blossom & Pink Grapefruit (30ml) is a delicious fruity floral with notes of pink grapefruit, ginger, soy milk and musk.

Annick Goutal Mandragore EdT (30ml) which came in a beauty box ages ago. It has fruity minty notes.

The Library of Fragrance Gin & Tonic which is refreshing and zesty and Salt Air with seaside ozonic notes.

Oliver Bonas Blackberry Musk roll on which I picked up while Christmas shopping. See my review HERE.

Infusion Organique Sands of Morocco Organic EdP roll on which is lovely to wear on hot summer days. See my review HERE.

kai perfume oil roll on which is always in my stash. I love the gardenia and fresh green notes. It's the perfect holiday scent.

Ancienne Ambiance Colonia Collection* are a simply stunning trio of scents. See my thoughts HERE.

Jimmy Choo Perfume roller-ball which I picked up in Sephora in Paris. Love a little Jimmy Choo and rollerball perfumes!

Pacifica Tahitian Gardenia Roll on* which is a blend of gardenia, jasmine, sweet orange and tea leaves. It really is lovely. See my review HERE.

L'Occitane Magnolia & Mure Trial Size EdT which is fruity and floral. Figuier & Osmanthus EdT was limited edition last summer and is a juicy fig scent.

Freak by Illamaqua EdP I first got a sample of this in a Glossybox. This is my second full size bottle. It has notes Black Davana, Opium Flower, Poison Hemlock and Frankincense.

I received this little bottle of Tom Ford's White Suede EdP after a make-over. It's really lovely and has notes of musk, rose and amber.

On the wishlist are these along with Beaufort London's Coeur De Noir EdP.

What perfumes are in your collection?

Tom Ford Traceless Foundation SPF15 - 03 Fawn - this was an impulse (and expensive) buy which I bought before my spending ban in August - so it's lasted really well. A nice foundation which I'd maybe buy again.

Urban Decay Perversion mini Mascara - loved everything about this mascara. Full size is on the wishlist.

Kneipp Pure Bliss Mineral Bath Salts sachet - this was nice to use and would buy again.

Dr Bronner Peppermint Pure Castille Soap 237ml - this is a staple for make up brush cleaning. Just cracked open a new one.

March: Lately I've Been Loving

I was really chuffed to be one of the bloggers chosen to read a proof copy of M P Wright's "All through the Night". See my review HERE. I was also over the moon to be mentioned in the acknowledgements.  This book is part of a series so make sure to read Heartman first.

I totally fell in love with these beautiful massage candles* and bars* from The Herb Garden. See my review HERE.

Something which makes me super happy is a skinny latte in my favourite mug. Simple pleasures eh!

Emily at Fleurelle Illustrations captured it perfectly in my "favourite things" watercolour.

I picked up the Sheer Luxe box from Latest in Beauty (it sold out in a few hours). My favourite item from the box are the gorgeous Tada & Toy Rose Gold Studs. I've worn them constantly since they arrived! The rest of the contents were pretty cool too (plus I'm keeping a couple of bits for gifts).

I've been trying this beautiful Rose scented candle* from Cotswold Candle Company. It's absolutely gorgeous - expect a review shortly.

Terre Verdi Instagram Win

I was absolutely thrilled to win Terre Verdi's first Instagram Giveaway. I got to chose two products and picked the very gorgeous FranChouliPom Body Oil and Balancing Facial Serum.

Terre Verdi is a new brand to me and was founded by Alessandra de Gregorio who grew up in Sicily where she had a close affinity to nature. The essential oils used in the products are from where she grew up.

The products are really luxurious and are 100% Vegan and are made with ethically sourced and certified organic ingredients.

My favourite of the pair is FranChouliPom Body Oil* (100ml - £31) a rich and luxe blend of Frankincense, Patchouli, Neroli, Sweet Orange Peel Oil with Argan, White Tea Seed, Sunflower Seed, Pomegranate Seed, Jojoba Seed Oils with Calendula extract and Vitamin E.  99% organic and certified by COSMOS. It leaves the skin feeling nourished, supple and delicately scented and is a real pleasure to use.

I've been using the Balancing Facial Serum* (30ml - £25) when my skin's been feeling hormonal. It balances and relieves any skin irritations and includes astringent Geranium & Tea Tree essential oils.  Use AM/PM after cleansing and before moisturising.

Have you tried any products from the range?

The Herb Garden Massage Candles & Bars

Jo Farren and Shani Croft, are the two herbalists behind The Herb Garden. They live and work local to Hitchin and make high quality and quite lovely products using simple raw ingredients which have herbal and aromatherapy benefits.

Where possible they use organic ingredients with no artificial scents and chemicals and they adhere to strict EU standards.

I was sent two massage candles in Relaxing* and Refreshing* (£10) and massage bars in Warming* (£8 for 2).

Relaxing scent is made with Lavender and German Blue Chamomile with a soy wax base. Soy wax has a lower melting point and is combined with organic Almond oil and organic Shea butter. Light and let the candle burn before blowing the flame out and applying the scented oil to the skin.  This is lovely to use just before bed to calm and relax.

Refreshing scent again blends Soy wax, organic Almond oil and organic Shea butter with oils of Peppermint, Eucalyptus and Thyme which enliven and awakens and is also great to clear the mind or sinuses. Apply the melted wax to the soles of your feet to ease congestion and for a good night's sleep.

Warming scent spicy Cinnamon is blended in a massage base with Ginger, sweet Orange and Lemon. Rub in hands to melt the wax to an oil and apply to the skin.

The massage candles and bars are really lovely and well priced. I can't actually pick a favourite scent as they are all really effective depending on your mood. Pick yours up HERE.

Bloom Perfumery: Yearly Sample Pack: March 2016

My March Bloom Perfumery Sample Pack arrived on Friday and this month to commemorate the first flowers of spring iris is a note used in all the scents.

"the scent of iris is derived from the root of the plant so the sensation of its smell can often be a little misleading when people think of it as a flower".

"Considered powdery and earthy, Iris also smells aqueous, as if it's bursting with a violet like freshness. On it's own it can smell like warm, sunned skin or as a natural musk, but in tandem with other ingredients it's effect is startlingly individual. It can inject a dry streak into a floral perfume or soften an oriental composition".

My absolute favourite this month is Nishane's Boszporousz Extrait de Parfum 1.2ml (50ml - £110, 1ml - £5). It has just landed at Bloom and is Exclusive and is simply gorgeous. It has top notes of cypress, galbanum, sage and seaweed with a heart of gardenia and jasmine and a base of amber, musk, oakmoss and patchouli. A pretty floral with salt, sage and seagrass notes reminiscent of the Bosphorous strait shores.

Next to capture my heart is PG's 21 Felanilla EdP 1.6ml (50ml - £81.50, 1.6ml - £2) which is a best seller at Bloom Perfumery. "This is vanilla for grown-ups" and has top notes of saffron, vanilla with a heart of hay and iris absolute and a base of amber.

The final four are Etat Libre d'Orange Benderelious EdP 1.6ml (50ml - £70) which has notes of champagne, cherry lollipop, grapefruit, iris absolu, iris butter, leather, musk tonka bean, vetiver and violet leaf absolute.

Exclusive to Bloom Perfumery .vero.profumo. Mito EdP 1.2ml (50ml - £138, 1.2ml - £5) with top notes of green leaves, a heart of champaca, magnolia grandiflora and tuberose with a base of galbanum and hyacinth

Grossmith's Diamond Jubilee Bouquet EdP 1.4ml (50ml - £195, 1.6ml - £5) which was created to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee. The heart is a powder iris.  It has top notes of lemon, lily of the valley, narcissus and orange with a heart of carnation, iris, jasmine, rose, vetiver and violet with a base of amber, hawthorn, tonka beans and vanilla.

New In The Merchant of Venice's Ottoman Amber EdP 1.6ml (100ml - £120, 1.6ml - £2) which has notes of labdanum, myrrh, oud accord, patchouli and vanilla.

What are your thoughts on this month's selection?
