Revisiting: Natural Wisdom

I was thinking about brands I'd loved in the past and hadn't used for a while and thought I'd do a sort of "revisiting" type post.  First one up is Natural Wisdom, a small company based in Hampshire with strong eco and ethical values. The company was founded in 2007 by Maeve Smith, a Homeopath with a passion for organic agriculture, ecology, herbal medicine and nutrition.

You can see my review of their Rose & Pomegranate Antioxidant Hydrating Toner here.  I also tried the Rosehip & Pomegranate Facial Cream Cleanser which I had to try after reading Danny's excellent in-depth review.

On browsing the website these products caught my eye:

Vitamin C & Pomegranate Antioxidant Hand Cream (50ml - £18) - a rich and nourishing hand cream which is easily absorbed. Love that you can choose your scent or choose unscented.  I like the sound of Happiness with essential oils of Ylang Ylang, Lime, Cardamon, Rosewood, Black Pepper and Sandalwood.

Rosehip & Pomegranate Antioxidant Skin Survival Balm (100ml - £24) - this balm sounds like it will be perfect coming into Autumn/Winter. It soothes, nourishes and protects the skin leaving it soft and supple. Use on dry patches, hands, feet, lips, cuticles and to tame flyaway hair. I so love a multi-purpose product!  Packed full of nourishing ingredients like raw Shea Nut Butter and cold blended Rosehip, Raspberry and Pomegranate Seed oils.  You can buy this balm unscented or Wisdom scent which is a blend of Frankincense, Marjoram, Cedar Wood, Lavender and Rose.

Lemongrass & Mandarin Cleanser - this cleanser is great at removing all make up and daily grime and smells simply divine.  Massage onto damp skin and remove with a warmed damp muslin cloth.  It is soothing and purifying. Use AM and PM.  Loved this and would buy full size.

Lemongrass & Mandarin Toner - a refreshing light spritz which is restorative and balancing. It also contains green and white tea to sooth an calm. Apply to a cotton pad after cleansing. This is my favourite item from the set.

Bamboo & Oatmeal Facial Polish - bamboo and oatmeal gently exfoliate the skin for natural regeneration of skin cells. Massage in gentle circular movements before rinsing. Suitable for all skin types.

Green Clay & Camellia Mask - this mask deeply cleanses and draws out impurities. My oily T-zone has been loving this mask.  Apply to the skin avoiding eye and lip areas leave on for 10 minutes and remove with a warmed mitt.

Lemongrass & Camellia Moisturiser - a balancing and refreshing lotion which contains Camellia oil and Aloe Vera to soothe and heal.  This is a perfect moisturiser for spring/summer but if you feel your skin needs a bit more moisture as the seasons change try Face Balm or Night Balm. 

I really enjoyed using this little Try Me kit and I'll definitely be picking up one or two of the others available - see the range here.

IW Natural Candle Company: Tuberose & Hibiscus

I adore scented candles and the ones from IW Natural Candle Company are gorgeous! I was very kindly sent one from their Restoring & Rebalancing Range. Each range has a selection of candle scents to chose from.

The candles are handmade in a garden workshop on the Isle of Wight and are made using natural soy wax and the finest essential oils.

I was sent a medium candle* which retails at £12.50 gift boxed. The candles start at £5.50 for a small one which is great as there are a lot of scents and you may wish to sample a few or give as a small gift.

Postage & Packaging is reasonable - £2.50 if your order is up to £20, £4.50 for purchases up to £30 and for orders over £30 postage is £6.50.  European and International orders carry a surcharge.  

Tuberose & Hibiscus has a sweet and floral scent with honey and spicy tones. Tuberose is one of my favourite scents and this candle lightly scents the room.

Therapie Awaken Skin Rehab Scrub & Joie Uplifting Bath Infusion

Galina at A Curious Russian in London sent me Therapie's Awaken Skin Rehab Scrub - thanks Galina! 

Full size of 125g retails at £28 - see more info here. This is unlike any scrub I've ever used before.  A powder which you either mix into your shower gel or with a little water and apply the paste over wet skin in sections paying attention to knees and elbows.

Awaken Skin Rehab boots circulation, removes dead skin cells, draws out impurities, reconditions, polishes, nourishes, cleanses, tones, heals and enlivens the skin.

It contains freeze dried pineapple, yoghurt and lime which are rich in enzymes and lactic acid and help to dissolve dead skin cells.  Zeolite Clay draws out impurities while Sandalwood, Rose, May Chang and Lotus give the scrub and amazing scent.  Mother of Pearl and Green Bamboo soften and polish the skin. As with all Therapie products I love this and will definitely purchase.

I received the Joie Uplifting Bath Infusion in a Cult Beauty GWP - see here (these run at least twice a year - you can sign up at the website to be one of the first to be notified).  Fulls size 200g retails at £44 which comes in a sleek black container.

This is a gorgeous bath soak which lifts you up when you are feeling down in the dumps.  "Aromatic fairy dust" which lifts the spirits, tones, softens and protects the skin.  It contains Organic Buttermilk to moisturise, grounding Sandalwood, protective Frankincense resin, Himalayan Cedarwood and Organic Rose powder to tone, soothe and rejuvenate.  Pink Clay softens while powdered Jasper protects and helps to make you feel secure.  Rose Quartz brings love and comforts. Scented with Rose, Tangerine, Geranium and Honeysuckle. It honestly does make you feel happier!

JOIK White Chocolate Bath Truffles

I recently came across new to me brand JOIK at Love Lula.  The brand was founded in 2005 in Estonia by Eva-Maria Õunapuu. She was trying to source natural soy wax candles and was struggling to find any so she decided to create her own. She found others loved them too and JOIK was born.  It is the most successful Estonian natural cosmetic brand and is sold in the best stores locally and exported to 12 countries throughout the world.

I'm a huge fan of soaks in the bath so knew I'd love the White Chocolate Bath Truffles (6 for £11.90) which are topped with rose petals.

They are stuffed full of moisturising cocoa butter and smell just like white chocolate - yum! Add one to a warm bath and let it slowly melt.

Packaging is stylish and would make great gifts. The products are also reasonably priced.  Here are a couple of other things which have caught my eye: Grapefruit & Mandarin Body Lotion with Carrot Oil (150ml - £14), Light Eye Cream with Mango Butter & Argan Oil (15ml - £16) and Alcohol Free Facial Toner with Aloe & Seabuckthorn Oil (100ml - £10.90).

Last year I showed you what products I'd bought again from my empties (September 2012-August 2013) see here.  I decided to do this again for the period September 2013-August 2014 - you'll see I favour some of the same brands again and again.. oh and I used up some 270 products.

Dr Bronner's 18-in-1 Peppermint Pure Castile Magic Soap 236ml - I've bought this time and time again. It's my favourite Dr Bronner scent. I use it to clean my make up brushes (and sometimes the bath!)  See my review here.

Nuxe Reve de Miel Hand & Nail Cream 75ml - a hand cream I keep coming back to and I always seem to have one in my stash. It featured in my post about my hand cream collection - see here.

A blend of rose, cardamon and pink pepper it is a floral scent with a spicy edge. 

The Rose Soaking Salts (200g) are a luxurious blend of sea salt, epsom salt, rose petals along with chunks of shea butter - so looking forward trying it. The Rose Bath Oil (30ml) is packed full of nourishing oils. Having used some of the other bath oils before I know I'm going to love it. There is a Rose Natural Pillow Spray (50ml) which helps to relax and unwind and a Rose Beauty Balm (15ml) a lovely rich balm which is great for cuticles, elbows, heels and feet.  Added extras include a loofah, a do not disturb door sign and a short story "Moments with Rose".

The Elemental (Blair Dubh Trilogy #1) by Heather Atkinson - Freya MacAlister wishing to lay ghosts to rest arrives back in Blair Dubh, an isolated Scottish village where she spent some of her childhood.

There is a murder and due to things that happened in the past fingers point Freya's way.  A storm cuts off the village with a murderer in it's midst.  There is a second murder, a woman is burned to death which mimicking a series of old murders using the elements. Craig Donaldson, Freya's childhood friend and local Policeman is racing to find the killer. A great read with interesting characters.

My second book this month is The Drowning Tide (Blair Dubh Trilogy #2) by Heather Atkinson - Glasgow in a heatwave. Rioting breaks out at Barlinnie Prison. John Docherty a violent prisoner escapes and sets out to destroy the lives of those he believes destroyed his.  Top of the list is Freya Donaldson (nee MacAlister).  Craig and Freya have been happily married for 2 years with the Elements murders behind them.  They are trying for a much longed for baby and Craig's ex girlfriend is making a nuisance of herself so they decide to take a break and have a holiday.  They borrow a boat and decide to cruise to Arran. Freya isn't happy on water so they make their first stop Blair Dubh. They are being watched and things happen - their boat is damaged, Freya's parents graves are vandalised and Freya fears for her live.. Looking forward to book #3.

Blood in the Water by Gillian Galbraith* - I was sent this book to review by Love Reading. I really enjoyed it. 

A new detective is in town. Meet DS Alice Rice, a single, ambitious woman in her 30s who needs to find a killer.  A series of murders take place and Alice needs to find the connection.  The first person murdered is a Consultant Gynaecologist then a handyman/odd job man, a QC and his Trainee.  The story takes us to the world of the legal profession and a medical negligence case. The story kept me interested throughout and I'd recommend it. Looking forward to reading more Alice Rice mysteries.

Whisky from Small Glasses by D A Meyrick - this is a stunning debut novel set in the rural Scottish town of Kinloch.  A woman's body is found in the sea and this is closely followed by two more murders.  Chief Inspector Jim Daley is sent to investigate with his DS Brian Scott - they have a great relationship and work well together. They uncover a drug smuggling ring, violence and corruption. Great characters and storyline. I guessed who the murderer was quite early on but this didn't spoil the enjoyment of the book. Would recommend. I'm looking forward to reading Denzil's second book The Last Witness - edit: I'm reading it just now and can't put it down!

Watch Me by James Carol - Having loved Broken Dolls I was eagerly awaiting James's second book. I did enjoy it but it didn't wow me like the first book. Ex-FBI profiler Jefferson Winter has a new case in Eagle Creek, Lousiana. The story opens with a man being set on fire and the video clip along with a link to a chilling website is sent to the Police.  Winter works with Taylor, a junior cop and his girlfriend helps out too. We find out the dead man is a well respected lawyer Sam Galloway. We learn more about Sam and his life. I didn't see it coming who the killer was. Quite fast paced with many twists and turns.

Little Lies by Liane Moriarty - Jane is a single mum to Ziggy. She moves to Piriwee a pretty seaside town. She makes friends with loud Madeline and beautiful Celeste. Their children are in the same kindergarten class.  An incident occurs in the playground and a witchhunt ensues.  We know at the beginning of the book there has been a murder at the Audrey & Elvis Trivia Night.  I enjoyed finding out more about the characters including some sad and shocking things.  There are some funny moments too along with bullying, cliques and competitive parents.  A really good read.

Your Beautiful Lies by Louise Douglas - I'm a huge fan of Louise's books - I've read all the others - if you haven't I highly recommend them all.

Anne Howarth lives in the mining village of Matlow in South Yorkshire with her Chief of Police husband and daughter.  The strikes of 1984 mean tensions are high.  A body is found on the moor and fingers are quick to point to Tom, Anne's ex boyfriend who has recently been released from prison spending 10 years of his life inside for manslaughter.  Anne struggles with her feeling for Tom as they resurface now he's back in town...  I loved the description of the moors, the town and the characters. A great read which I couldn't put down.

The Ways of the Dead by Neely Tucker - this is a first novel and it's brilliant! The body of the daughter of a Federal Judge is found in a dumpster in a rough neighbourhood in Washington DC.  Three local boys are suspected of the murder.  Sully Carter, Veteran War Correspondent and now journalist for the local paper suspects there is more to it and pursues his own line of enquiry with the help of local gangster, Sly Hastings. A really great book which keeps coming at you with twists and turns and an ending I didn't see coming. Can't wait for book 2!

My final book this month is Secrets on the Estate:Their Diaries Reveal All by Mel Sherratt* - Mel very kindly sent me a copy of the book to read. This is a great companion to The Estate series. It features diary entries from the main characters and includes stories from some of the characters in the next book in the series - Written in the Scars which is due out on 14 November.  It also features snippets from Josie Mellor, the Housing Officer, Prologues for the first three books and secrets from the author.

I loved it.  The cleansing water cleanses and refreshes the skin. I like to use it to remove make up including eye make up before a deep cleanse.  It featured in Shopping my Stash #53.

Honey & Propolis 2-in-1 Cream Cleanser (£11.50 - 100ml)* - this is simply one of the best cleansers I've ever used! Super rich, smells gorgeous and easily removes all make up and daily grime including waterproof mascara. I love it! It featured in Shopping my Stash #56.

Vanilla & Honey Lip Balm (£4.75 - 10ml)* - one of the lushest and most delicious lip balms I've ever used.  See my review here.

August: Lately I've been Loving

I had a great time at Foodies Festival at Inverleith Park at the beginning of the month. The sun shone and the food and drink available was fantastic. I even got to meet the lovely Fiona from Sciolti Botanical Chocolates which was a real treat in itself!  Of course I had to buy some chocolate too....

Also in the pic are The Marshmallow Lady Prosecco & Rose Marshmallows topped with rose petals (I love these and pick them up whenever I see them!)

I also had some tasty food at Bistro Moderne including a delicious perfect for summer time pudding. It was scrumptious!

I am totally obsessed with coconut water at the moment and this is my favourite brand.

Staying on the coconut theme...I picked up these Faith in Nature coconut products from Earthy Portobello. They stock a wide range of natural and organic skin and bodycare. These are gorgeous. Super moisturising and smell delicious. Great value at under a fiver each. Know I'll be buying again and again..

I came across a fab little shop in Tollcross in Edinburgh called Dandelion Edinburgh which sells fairtrade gifts, skincare, clothes, homewares and accessories. It really is lovely - know I'll be stopping by to pick up some gifts. I did treat myself to a hand-crafted geranium & rose petal soap from Organica J which smells gorgeous! Also love the homemade gift bags which are made out of old magazines!

The bath oils come in either 100mls (20 baths - £38) or 50mls (10 baths - £22). I love the chunky glass bottles which look super luxe sitting beside the bath.

Rebecca kindly sent me some samples of Joy, Patience & Peace Aromatherapy Bath Oils* and Skin Salvation Face Oil* (which was commended in last year's FreeFrom Skin Care Awards).

Joy is "sunshine" in a bottle - it's a happy and sunny scent with notes of orange, mandarin, petigrain, grapefruit and bergamot. Refreshing, cheering and uplifting.  Patience is spicy and warming and it contains rosemary, lavender, ginger and juniperberry while Peace is calming and relaxing with notes of lavender, ylang ylang, petigrain and cedarwood.  I reckon you need all three in your life!
