January: Lately I've been Loving

Here's what I'm loving this month:

I bought The Little Book of Lunch which is jam packed full of tasty lunch ideas. Only made one so far...the Spanish lunch which was simply yummy.

I picked up this really cute mug recently (I love collecting pretty mugs). A bargain at a fiver and it holds loads of tea.

a beautiful world sent me a pot of Indie Lee's Calendula Eye Balm* - it is quite simply the best eye product I've ever used and a full review will be up next week.

I'm loving that I've got back into reading this month and even tried my first Kindle book (borrowed the Kindle off hubby).  I just finished The Killer Next Door by Alex Marwood on Tuesday, super creepy and I just didn't see the ending coming! You can see my review here.  Still on the fence whether I'd buy a kindle as I love real books too much!  Although in saying that I've got a kindle book on blogging for profit which I've just started...

Pukka 3 Cinnamon Tea is simply delicious! It is a blend of Indian, Indonesian and Vietnamese teas. it has a sweet and spicy taste.  I'd probably never have discovered it as I tend to stick to tea brands I know. Jen at Daisy Rose Beauty knows I love teas and sent me a selection of sachets at Christmas.  I'm now on my second box!

Apivita sent me (and some other lucky bloggers!) gorgeous goodies at Christmas - Euphoria Bath & Shower Gel, Body Milk and Soap. The products are scented with Jasmine and White Tea and are simply gorgeous! So uplifting and the skin is left lightly scented.  A full review to follow.

What are you loving this month?

#NoBuyJanuary - Update 4

oooh! I made it to week 4 with only one buy which I wasn't allowed - the Latest in Beauty Hip & Healthy Beauty Discovery Box (which I'm still awaiting arrival of. Sad face)

I'm going to look back at my weekly wants lists for the last 4 weeks and decide what things I'm still going to buy.

Week 1:

This was an out-of-control list!

I was very kindly sent Indie Lee Calendula Eye Balm* from a beautiful world. A Review will be up very soon. I really don't know how I've lived for so long without this super nourishing product in my life! It's one I know I'll purchase again and again.

I reviewed Beauty Naturals Smoothing Sugar Cleanser* last week and you can see my post here. Again, I was really pleased to be sent this.

From the rest of my list from Week 1 this is what I'll purchase soon:

And...the rest of the list? Perhaps at some point but there's nothing from it I need instantly.

Week 2:

All lovely products I'd love to have in my collection. I'm tempted by...

Napiers Alkanet & Elderflower Lip Tint
Therapi Orange Blossom Balancing Honey Moisturiser

Week 3:

I am keen to have Antipodes Delight Hand & Body Cream in my collection but I am unable to source a UK stockist. Boo!

I also want to try Ayo Beauty The Collection Gift Set - Ultimate Joy but...I'm not really needing all these types of products at the moment. I'm nearly ready to buy a body scrub so I'll pick up The Body Polisher along with The Polishing Cloth.  Aren't I good.

Week 4:

Final week and final day today!  I think the four weeks of not spending have done me the world of good (hubby most definitely agrees!). I'd never have bought all the things on my wishlists and am pleased to say I'm looking more sensibly at possible purchases.

Here's my weekly wants list for week 4 - It's epic!

I can quite honestly say I want everything from this list! I have owned a bottle of the very gorgeous Frederic Malle Lipstick Rose EDP before & tried samples of Aesop Rind Aromatique Body Balm - thanks Galina for sending me them.

I'll let you know what things I eventually pick up from my wishlists.  How has your #NoBuyJanuary been?

January Books

Well I'm off to a good start with reading this month. I managed five books!

Love Nina: Despatches from Family Life by Nina Stibbe - in the 1980s Nina left Leicester and moved to London to become a nanny to two boys. The story is told in letters home to her sister - often hilarious and very entertaining. Nina left her employment as a nanny to attend Thames Polytechnic but always kept in touch with the family - even moving back in while at college.  She now lives in Cornwall with her husband and two children and works in publishing. I loved this book.

No time for Goodbye by Linwood Barclay - an easy reading crime type fiction book which follows Cynthia whose family disappear when she is a teenager and 25 years later she still wonders what happened to them.

Bay of Secrets by Rosanna Ley - I simply loved this and could not put it down!

Set in England and the Canary Islands. It is 2011 and Ruby Rae's parents are killed in a freak accident. While clearing out their house she comes across a shoebox filled with mementos and discovers a devastating secret. In Spain in 1939, Julia's parents leave her at a convent in Barcelona to ensure that she is safe during the war.  She works at a Maternity Clinic which uses unethical adoption procedures. She feels this is not quite right and she starts keeping a notebook detailing the cases which are not straightforward.  Ruby meets Andres who is connected to the story in a way you are not expecting. A fantastic read, can't recommend it highly enough.

I also just adored Rosanna's first book The Villa which I read in July.

The Trader's Sister by Anna Jacobs - this is the second part in a four part saga. Very easy reading but enjoyable.  I read the first part in October. This one follows Bram's sister, Ismay Deagan who is desperate to leave Ireland and join Bram and his wife in Australia.  She is attacked by a man desperate to marry her and her employers help her leave.  On the ship she meets a man, Adam Treagar and his Aunt whom she becomes a companion and friend to on the voyage. She is scared to let Adam get too close but he has secrets too..

My final book this month is The Killer next Door by Alex Marwood - this is not out in paperback until June so I borrowed hubby's kindle to read it and I'm glad I did! A creepy and sometimes gruesome book it kept me on the edge of my seat and burning the midnight oil. I loved Alex's first book The Wicked Girls which I read last January.

No.23 Beulah Grove is a crumbling house in South London which has been divided up into bedsits.  The six residents all have something to hide. Collette is on the run from her ex-boss, Cher is a children's home escapee and under age, Vesta has lived in the house all her life, first with her parents as she was growing up and now on her own as an old age pensioner, Thomas is quiet and shy but wants to be friends, Hossein is the good looking Asylum seeker and Gerald keeps himself to himself.

As the book progresses we find out more about each resident, sometimes disturbing information.  Roy Preece, the landlord is a vile man who really made my skin crawl.  An accident brings the residents together in an uneasy alliance. The ending is very clever and I never saw it coming.  Highly recommend.

OV Naturals Rose Geranium Harmonising Organic Facial Oil 10ml* - this was fab to use and I'd consider buying it.  See my review here.

balance Me Supertoning Body Wash 100ml - this was nice enough but I didn't love the scent so wouldn't buy.

Hairy Jayne Light Conditioner 30ml - again, nice enough to use but I preferred the cream conditioner. See the set I picked up here.

One Love Skin Saviour Sample - this multi-purpose beauty balm was quite nice - you can use it as a cleanser, moisturiser or to mix with mineral foundation. There are other balms I prefer so wouldn't buy.

Therapie Cherish Skin Repair Serum 30ml - simply loved this beautiful body serum.  The aromatics used deliver a gorgeous scent but also have healing and regenerating properties. Definitely one I'll buy again (in full size!)

Marlenha Petal Delicate Eye Serum

I first reviewed Marlenha products back in June* (trial size trio) and August* (this product is now called Flourish Moisturiser).

Marlenha is a range of handmade bio-skincare products which are crafted in Italy in small batches using artisan techniques, natural extracts and active ingredients.

Products are free from parabens, petroleum, paraffin, SLS and chemical preservatives.  98% of ingredients are natural with 2% being synthetic ingredients certified and approved by EcoCert and the Soil Association.  There is no animal testing.

I was sent Petal Delicate Eye Serum* (£44 for 30ml) to review recently.

The eye serum rejuvenates and moisturises the eye area. It contains Edelweiss Stem Cells, Hyaluronic Acid and Borage Oil which are rich in Omegas 3 & 6.  The serum helps boost cell regeneration and even the skin tone.  I've found the skin around my eyes to be brighter with dark circles reduced and the skin plumped and hydrated.

To use: apply morning and night, patting a small amount around the eye area. Suitable for all skin types.  I've found it nice to use. It absorbs easily and has a pleasant light scent.

Have you used any Marlenha products before?

Simply Bee

Simply Bee recently sent me some of their products to try and review.  A family business which was launched in March 2011 in Hopefield, South Africa and dad, Derick Hugo has some 40 years beekeeping experience.

Products are handmade using ingredients from renewable and plentiful natural resources.  They are free from parabens, sulfates, petrochemicals, synthetic colours and fragrances.

They contain propolis and beeswax, honey and essential oils. Propolis is nature's own antiseptic and preservative and has been used in beauty treatments for thousands of years to purify, heal and smooth the skin.  The products can also help with acne, eczema, psoriasis, age spots and is anti-ageing.

Heel Balm* 125ml - £15

This is a rich balm made from a natural formulation and it contains Propolis, Beeswax, Shea Butter, Sweet Almond Oil with Tea Tree Essential Oil.  It moisturises and softens dry and cracked skin on the feet.  I tend to use it just before bed popping on a pair of socks to lock in moisture and wake up with beautifully soft feet in the morning.  It does have quite a strong Tea Tree scent (which I'm not normally a fan of) but I've been enjoying using the balm. It's my favourite of the three products.

Propolis Serum* 30ml - £21

This is a rich serum which only contains three ingredients - Propolis, Sweet Almond Oil and Neroli Essential Oil.  It has a fruity/woody scent.  It calms, heals and moisturises the skin.  It is anti-bacterial and decongesting and can help with anti-ageing and age spots.  Suitable for all skin types even sensitive.  Apply a few drops to the face and neck twice a day before moisturising.

Lip Balm* 10ml - £3.90

Soothes and moisturises dry and chapped lips leaving them smooth and comfortable.  Contains Beeswax, Propolis, Peppermint and Rosemary Essential Oils.  Apply as often as needed.

The packaging is pretty cute and there is a whole range of products available - day and night creams, cleansing cream, hand cream, hand & body wash, hand & body lotion, honey beeswax soap, men's and baby products and balms. See here.

Merionwen Vintage Rose Massage Bar

As you'll know I am a huge Merionwen fan!  The Vintage Rose Massage Bar* (40g - £7.50) is packed full of nourishing oils and butters and lightly scented with rose.

Individually wrapped and shaped like a flower it is easy to hold whether you are using it for massage or as a body moisturiser.

To use: smooth over warm skin allowing the oils to melt before massaging it in.

It leaves the skin deeply moisturised and smelling of roses.

Handmade in small batches, of spa quality and reasonably priced. It would make a great small gift and also be perfect for Valentine's Day!

Have you used this or any other Merionwen products?

Dr Organic Rose Otto Lip Serum

I received Dr Organic's Rose Otto Lip Serum for Christmas along with a selection of other Rose Otto goodies.  You can see them here.

This lip balm is simply gorgeous!  It contains rose oil and vanilla and tastes a bit like raspberry ripple ice cream. Yum!  It leaves the lips super glossy and keeps them moisturised as well as firming and toning the lips.

You can buy it at Holland & Barratt - see here.

Have you used this before?  What's your favourite lip balm?

#NoBuyJanuary - Update 3

I've been really good this week and not bought a thing!  I'm still awaiting the arrival of my Latest in Beauty The Hip & Healthy Beauty Discovery Box which I ordered last week (£13.90).

I've been getting through loads of half used beauty products and have been finding lots of old favourites.

My weekly wants list is fairly modest this week:

I did come across a gorgeous and exciting looking new brand Ayo via my Emerald Street email on Wednesday and I am excited to buy and try the products at the beginning of February. Susan, the founder seems a lovely lady and her late sister Joy is the inspiration behind the brand.

The products whose scent is called "Salute the Sun" contains essential oils of Sicilian Bergamot, Lemon, Jasmin Sambac, Geranium Bourbon, Rose Absolute, Sandalwood, Patchouli and Vanilla to name a few.  You can see the full fragrance list here.

Of course I'm wanting to try all three products (on introductory special offer until 28 February) - The Body CremeThe Body Polisher which you use with The Polishing Cloth and The Body Cleanser.

How is your spending ban coming along?

Beauty Naturals & Skin Revivals Smoothing Sugar Cleanser

I started shopping at Beauty Naturals long before I became a beauty blogger. It's a great online shop stuffed full of interesting beauty products as well as green home products.  You can also order via the catalogue paying by cheque.  You can order a catalogue here.  Standard delivery is free in the UK.

Beauty Naturals is a family run business which was started by their late grandmother, Martha Hill. She introduced her effective and cruelty free products over 40 years ago.  Own brands include - Martha Hill, Skin Revivals, David Hill, Purely Hair Care and Herbs for Health.  You can see these here.  There is no animal testing and the own brands are made in the UK.  You can see full ingredients lists for each product on the website.

Other brands available to buy include Amie, Badger, Konjac, Steam Cream, Organic Surge, Orly, Burt's Bees, Dr Bronner's and Jason, to name a few.

If you introduce family and friends to Beauty Naturals and they place an order Beauty Naturals will give you a £5 gift voucher.  You can join The Martha Hill Beauty Club which costs £15 for a year's membership.  When you join you chose a "club product" and every time you buy it during your year's membership you get it half price.  Members also get 10% off each order and can collect beauty points.

Beauty Naturals very kindly sent me their Skin Revivals Smoothing Sugar Cleanser* (50ml - £11.50) after spotting it in Week 1 of my #NoBuyJanuary Weekly Wants List.  This product received a Highly Commended Award in the Natural Health Beauty Awards last year.  It is free from artificial colour, perfume, primary petro-chemicals and parabens.

The first thing I noticed was how beautiful the cleanser smells when I opened the pot - it contains mandarin orange, lemon and apple geranium oils along with Sweet Almond oil, Olive butter and Beeswax.  It also contains refined sugar crystals which exfoliate as you cleanse.

Apply the cleanser to wet skin and the "buttery oil turns to a silky lotion".  Gently massage the cleanser into the skin and the sugar crystals will gently exfoliate leaving my skin soft, radiant, smooth and glowy. Remove with a warm damp muslin cloth.  Great for skin which is dry, dull or congested.  Use once or twice a week.

Pampering #4

I was feeling a bit down in the dumps at the weekend so decided to have a long soak in the bath plus some pampering with a face, hair and neck mask.  Here's what I chose:

Melvita Milky Cleansing Oil* this is a fab and really effective cleanser! Apply onto the skin massaging it into the skin. Apply some water and it transforms to a milky lotion. Scented with Damask Rose essence it's one of my favourites.

Jamela 24k Gold Neck Mask* - this mask is perfect for revitalising the skin and pampering. This mask contains Mineral Gold, Hyaluronic Acid, plant collagen and rose esssential oil. It is a real luxury mask and leaves the skin moisturised and radiant with fine lines reduced. It can be used in conjunction with Jamela 24k Gold Collagen Face Mask.

urbanveda Radiance Exfoliating Facial Polish - a very effective and gentle polish which is nice to use.  It helps to brighten the skin and make it more radiant.

Philip B Katira Hair Masque - this is a really effective masque. It leaves the hair super soft and oh so shiny. I like how you can leave it on overnight too for a deep treatment.

Manuka Doctor Rejuvenating Face Mask - I received this in a trial size kit recently. It's an intensive mask made from bee venom. It can also be used as an intensive moisturiser.  Leave on 15-20 minutes and rinse off.

Neom Refresh Organic Bath & Shower Oil - an uplifting and refreshing bath oil. It always makes me feel happier when I use it in my bath.

Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse OR -  This oil is great to use on the body, face and hair. It moisturises the skin and leaves it with a bit of sparkle!

Have you used any of these products?  What are your favourite ones to pamper?

Radical Skincare: Age-Defying Exfoliating Pads

I was recently sent Radical Skincare Age-Defying Exfoliating Pads* (£45 for 60 pads) to review.

radicalskincare.com was founded by Liz and Rachel, daughters of Dr Richard F Edlich MD PHD, a world renowned Professor of Plastic Surgery.  Personal health issues led to them creating Radical Skincare.  You can read their story here.

The Age Defying Exfoliating Pads remove dead skin cells. They contain AHA and BHA multi-fruit acid which exfoliate, help with cell turnover, remove crows feet by 50% (in two weeks) and reduce pore size.

The Radical Skincare range is anti-ageing and the products are designed to work beneath the skin's surface to counteract the effects of time. They contain restorative and protective ingredients and Trylacel Technology is used.

The pads help to even out skintone, remove excess sebum, improve skin firmness, are anti-ageing and suitable for all skin types even sensitive.

Apply at night only and apply on the face, neck and decollete after cleansing.

Radical Skincare has grown based on its radical results and word of mouth. The products are stocked in 800 stores in 15 countries in under 3 years.

My thoughts? My skin is brighter, my t-zone less oily, my skin feels firmer and my pores are smaller.

I'm adding Eye Revive Creme and the Hydra Firm Kit to my wishlist!
