September: Lately I've Been Loving

We had a great time at Let's Eat Glasgow at the beginning of the month. It was a new event this year and was brilliant! Loved the choices from all the restaurants - we sampled lots! Fingers crossed it runs again next year.

Yum! Delicious food from Ox and Finch

Gorgeous local Origin Honey at Plan Bee Ltd

Scrumptious choccies from Stacy Hannah Chocolates

Attending Alison's book launch party was amazing! Was really great to meet her. Check out her book here - it's a great read. It was also a real pleasure to meet Lin Anderson.

It's been an absolute joy to try out the beautiful range* Amanda has created for Harris Distillery. See my thoughts HERE.

I enjoyed an incredible Oskia facial* at Aspen Therapies at the beginning of the month. See my review HERE. It was one of the best facials I've ever had. Looking forward to going back soon!

I especially love this Ted Baker notebook for taking down blog notes. So pretty!

Alison at Complement Your Health invited me along to create my own perfume* (I visited Alison 10 years ago to create a wedding scent). So it was exciting to go back and see if I still liked the same type of scent. Expect a full post on my experience next week!

What have you been loving this month?

September Books

Untouchable - Ava Marsh* - I simply loved this fast paced and gritty debut novel. Stella is an escort who enjoys the life she's chosen and most of the men she has sex with. When a fellow call girl and friend is murdered Stella can't help but get involved. She wants to find out what happened to Amanda and get justice for her friend.

An exciting story full of murder, revenge and blackmail. We also find out more about Stella including her past and possible future. A great read would recommend.

Having recently loved Peter's latest novel Chance (review) I picked up Ticket and wasn't disappointed.  Paul who is living the corporate life out a suitcase meets a young woman on a train who seems down on her luck. He pays for her train ticket and she insists on paying him back. He wakes up the next morning with her dead body beside him...he has no idea how this happened and goes on the run to try and find out who has set him up. Fast paced and thrilling. A great read.

The Murders at White House Farm - Carol Ann Lee* - Thirty years on from the murders at White House Farm Carol Ann lee draws on new research and correspondence with Jeremy Bamber taking us through the investigation and trial. A very well researched and detailed book.

My Everything - Katie Marsh - A simply stunning debut novel. If you like Jojo Moyes you'll love Katie's book.

Hannah's relationship with her husband Tom has broken down and she is planning on leaving him. But fate intervenes, Tom who has a high powered corporate job has a stroke and their lives are changed forever.  He has to learn to do everything again - eat, walk, talk, use his phone etc. Tom re-evaluates his life and is determined to save his marriage. He's now also more like the Tom that Hannah used to know.

She was planning on going to teach in Tanzania before Tom became ill. His sister Jules is a prickly character who I loved reading about. Tom realises he has to let Hannah go for her to come back to him...Brilliant book which I keep telling everyone to go and buy! Can't wait for Katie's next book.

Bride without a Groom - Amy Lynch* - Rebecca is self-obsessed in the extreme (and totally annoying) as well as being determined to marry her long suffering boyfriend Barry. They split up over her obsessing about her wedding (he's not even proposed yet) and he heads off on a business trip where he finds himself in bed with his colleague, Shelley. Wracked with guilt he decides to propose on his return.

I found Becks very annoying and at times heartless and uncaring.  There are a few laugh out loud moments though.

Liar Liar (DI Helen Grace Thriller) - M J Arlidge - this is the fourth novel in the DI Helen Grace series. An arsonist is on the loose and the attacks seem to be loosely connected. Businesses and homes are being targeted. As the deaths toll mounts up the race is on to find the killer.

Fast paced with punchy short chapters. Lots of twists and turns and I didn't see who was guilty until it was right upon us. Fantastic read. Go buy!

Nashville Eats - Jennifer Justus* - This is one of these books I want to own in hardcover! It's simply beautiful and I absolutely loved it. It's full of wonderful anecdotes with music recommendations for each chapter. Some recipes I really want to try are - beaten biscuits, hot chicken, jalepeno cornbread, squash casserole, fried green tomatoes, bourbon sweet potatoes, pepper peach preserve, Blackberry, Honey, Black pepper & Thyme jam (this sounds incredible), watermelon rind pickle and Sweet Tea, honey. A really beautiful book.

All Through the Night - M P Wright** - Mark's second novel in the JT Ellington Trilogy is not out until next year but I got a sneaky preview. See my mini review of Heartman HERE.

Without giving too much away the second part is simply un-put-downable. It's a fast paced read with many twists and turns. Some of my favourite characters are back - Mrs Pearse, Loretta, Cousin Vic and Uncle Gabe & Aunt Pearl along with some new faces.

JT takes on a job which he believes will be straightforward but it turns out to be anything but! A thrilling read with an ending I didn't see coming! When I'm allowed I'll do a fuller review.

The Last Embrace - Pam Jenoff* - August 1940 and Addie is sent to stay with her aunt & uncle from her home in Italy. She initially finds the US strange but makes friends with a family down at the shore who are also on holiday. They live nearby in Atlantic City and become friends. Addie falls head over heels for Charlie and they plan to be together after the war. But fate intervenes. She leaves home to work in Washington and then London and a chance meeting with Charlie stirs up all these emotions and they spend one glorious night together before it all falls apart.

Addie heads back home to the States to be with her aunt after her uncle's death and meets up with Liam, the brother who caused the death of his younger sibling. It has a surprise ending which I didn't see coming. Loved it.

The Burning (Maeve Kerrigan #1) - Jane Casey - Maeve Kerrigan is an ambitious DC determined to make her mark. The case of The Burning Man is one she is keen to be a part of solving. The 5th victim doesn't seem to be the work of "the burning man" and Maeve is determined to find out who is responsible.  Loved the characters and great storylines. Can't wait to read more in the series.

Mamma Oceania Handmade Soaps

I've been trying out Anna's lovely Mamma Oceania - Mermaid Approved Clean soaps*.

Anna (previously in Fashion PR and publishing) started making soaps for herself and a couple of friends. Presents to family members followed with everyone loving her soaps. So she set up her business in Toronto, Canada selling artisan wholesome, gentle soaps which are creamy and unscented - and suitable for all the family.

Made with allergen free Banana extract, Coconut Oil, Canadian Sea Kelp, Sweet Almond Oil and Olive Oil which are all USDA certified Organic. The soaps are dye, fragrance and preservative free and there is no animal testing.

The cold process method is used and it takes 4-6 weeks for the soaps to cure and harden.

Anna sent me two soaps* to try out and I've loved both of them - Gentle Exfoliating Soap (with Pomegranate, Coconut, Kelp and Oatmeal and Skin Soothing Soap (with Cucumber, Banana, Kelp and Oatmeal) - see the full range HERE.

Soaps cost a very reasonable $8 Canadian Dollars (£3.94) plus shipping costs and I'd highly recommend!

IASO Ghassoul Black Cleansing Oil

I've been testing out Korean IASO Ghassoul Black Cleansing Oil (£21.90)*. The cleansing oil contains Moroccan Ghassoul Clay which was created over 150 million years ago. The Cleansing Oil helps to clear dirt, oil, make up, whiteheads and blackheads and leaves the skin feeling clean and nourished.

It also cleanses and tightens pores and eliminates dead skin cells. Made with a blend of caring oils which soothe, clean, cleanse and tighten. The oil has a lovely gentle floral scent and is nice to use.

To use: apply to the skin massaging in circular motions (I found I had to avoid the eye area as I felt the product sting slightly) before rinsing with lukewarm water.

The company also very kindly sent me some samples* which I'll review shortly.

Spending Ban: Updates & Wants #5

I picked up a staple product for me in the Tabitha James Kraan sale (£15.50 plus P&P). I use it every single day and at that great price it had to be bought!

Onto my wants this week:

Narynda Face Care Pack (£7.50) - I'm always a sucker for try me sizes and this little set is great! It contains cleanser, toner, face & body scrub, day cream and night cream - see my reviews of the cleanser, toner and day cream HERE*. I'm also keen to pick up the Body Care Pack (£5.50) (the heel balm is ace!)

Staying on the travel sizes...

I spotted this little Autumn Mini Treats set at LJ's Natural Solutions (£9.95) - it includes - 30ml Autumn Uplift Organic Body Oil, 5g Balancing Organic Moisturiser, 5g Organic Deep Cleansing Balm and 3g OMG Serum.

I was also tempted by (but didn't) an email offer from Naturisimo which was a free sample pack with any with purchase and included samples from: Spiezia, John Masters Organics, Inlight, Estelle & Thild and Patyka. Sign up for Beauty Alerts at the bottom of the main webpage.

I'm finding the spending ban fairly easy but I know there are going to be lots and lots of wants in the run up to Christmas! If you are on a spending ban how is it going?

Bloom Perfumery: Yearly Sample Pack: September 2015

I'd forgotten that I was due my Bloom Perfumery September sample pack so it was a nice treat to receive it when I arrived home from work yesterday. This month the scents are perfect for the start of autumn - warm woods infused with vanilla, amber, frankincense, ginger and more. I actually love all the scents this month.

The pefume that stands out the most for me is one which is new in Beaufort London Coeur de Noir EdP (£95 - 50ml - £2 - 1.6ml) - it's a simply stunning perfume and unlike anything I own. From a new British Perfume House which draws inspiration from ships, sea battles, voyages and tattoos. It has top notes of ginger, ink and rum, heart notes of leather, paper and vanillin with base notes of cedar, tobacco and birch tar. It starts off very powerful and mellows to a smokey sexy scent. Love it!

Passion Boisée (Frapin) EdP £98 - 100ml - £2 - 1.6ml) is a warm and spicy scent with top notes of mandarin and nutmeg, a heart of cypress and rosewood with base notes of ambrette seed, sandalwood and vanilla. It appears quite subtle and perfect for autumnal days.

Eau de Madeleine (Au Pays de la Fleur d'Oranger) EdP £110 - 100ml - £2 - 1.6ml) a beautiful scent which has notes of frankincense, leather, sandalwood, vanilla and incense.

Hasu-no-Hana (Grossmith) EdP £185 - 50ml - £5 - 1.6ml) it's nice to be able to try a perfume I'd never be able to afford! This is a classic formula from 1888, an oriental chypre which is rich with flower, spice and wood notes. It has top notes of bergamot, bigarade orange with heart notes of iris, jasmine, rose and ylang ylang and base notes of oakmoss, patchouli, cedar, sandalwood, tonka bean and vetiver.

The Architects Club (Arquiste) EdP £135 - 100ml - £2 - 1.6ml) a delicious autumn amber with a note of Mexican vanilla, benzoin and resins and woods. It has notes of ambermax, amber, angelica root, bigarade orange, gaiac wood, juniper, lemon, oak and vanilla.

The final perfume this month is best selling PG18 Cadjméré (Parfumerie Generale) EdP £117.50 - 100ml - £2 - 1.6ml) which is comforting and gentle. A soft sandalwood with a hint of vanilla. With a top note of tangerine, a heart of cypress and rosewood and base notes of ambrette seed, sandalwood and vanilla.

I really love all the scents this month and I'm looking forward to trying them out. Do any of the perfumes included this month jump out at you?

Bee Good Raspberry & White Chocolate Lip Balm

Bee Good's new Raspberry & White Chocolate Lip Balm (10ml - £4.75)* is just gorgeous! It was the winner of the Bee Good Great British Lip Balm 2015 competition and was designed by Beauty Vlogger, Joseph Harwood.

It soothes and nourishes the lips and the scent is incredible - juicy fruity notes of wild raspberries along with sweet decadent white chocolate and British honey. Yum!

I can quite honestly say it's addictive. The handy size tube is perfect for popping in your pocket or handbag. Apply to the lips as often as needed.

You can also buy the lip balm in a triple pack (£10.50) so you can have one in your desk drawer too. It would also make a great small gift or Secret Santa pressie.

Have you tried this lip balm yet?

Shopping my Stash #65

I've been loving raiding my stash again on the spending ban and have found some great products! Here's what I've been reaching for lately:-

Fair Squared Lip Balm in Spearmint - a lush and supermoisturising balm. See my review HERE.

Shay & Blue Blood Oranges - a super sweet and juicy scent which captures ripe and fresh oranges perfectly. Brings a bit of summertime to autumn days.

Blue Labelle Hand Oil - which is a deeply nourishing oil for dry hands. See my review HERE.

Olivine Love+Peace Sparking Pink Bath Bath Salts (pick yours up at a beautiful world). I picked these up just before my spending ban kicked in. They are perfect to use before bed to calm and relax. The salts contain Himalayan Pink Sea Salt, Organic Cocoa and Shea Butters, Epsom salts and an essential oil blend of Lavender (quite heavy on the lavender), Ylang Ylang, Rose and Orris Root.

Nourish Golden Glow Illuminating Face Shimmer - one of my favourite Nourish products. I use it before foundation (or add it to foundation) to add a glow. See my review HERE.

Nourish Protect Hydrating Moisturiser - I'm finding as the days are getting colder I'm needing something more nourishing to protect my skin.  This rich cream nourishes and hydrates (and is lovely!)

Neal's Yard Remedies Bee Lovely Body Lotion 100ml - this was free with Instyle mag this month. I loved the hand cream in this fragrance previously. This body moisturiser absorbs quickly and leaves the skin nourished with an orange-y scent. Love it!

What have you been reaching for this week?

PLANT ØÅ Face Oil

I've been testing out PLANT's OA Face Oil* (30ml - £26.95). PLANT makes apothecary and gourmet goods with a conscience. From a Brooklyn based design studio with an online shop and wholesale distribution PLANT was founded by Holly McWhorter and Bjarke Ballisager, a husband and wife team.

I have already tried and loved the gorgeous CALM DOWN body wash* (review) so I was really excited to try one of the new facial oils now available at a beautiful world.

The face oil I've been testing is suitable for Normal & Combination skin types (there is also ones available for dry and oily skins). See more details here.

Holly and Bjarke design and formulate all products either together or independently and they both have a passion for the environment, natural beauty and grooming.  I love that the products are made with the help of adults with physical and mental disabilities which in turn gives them access to training and paid work.

In Danish, “Ø” means island (dry) and an “Å” is a creek (wet) which symbolizes an oil that combines lightweight and rich moisturizers for both normal and combination dry/oily skin.

One of the things that first jumped out at me was the oil contains Sea Buckthorn which is one of my favourite oils. I also love the simple but stylish packaging. The facial oil is really lovely to use and leaves the skin nourished and looking radiant. The blend for Normal/Combination skins contains Rosmary, Sweet Orange and Ginger along with Sweet Almond, Macadamia Nut, Grapeseed, Jojoba, Sea Buckthorn, Pomegranate Seed Oils along with Vitamin E.

To use: rub 4 drops in the palms before massaging into face and neck. My thoughts? An absolutely fantastic oil which absorbs instantly, smells fantastic (with a ginger kick) and leaves my skin nourished and rejuvenated.

Have you tried this or one of the other facial oils?

Saach Organics: Green Tea & Aloe Vera Shower Gel & Hand & Body Lotion

Harvinder Parhar, the founder of Saach Organics recently sent me a box full of goodies to review. I'm trying these out and will post reviews of them all shortly.

Harvinder saw a photo of her grandmother putting oil in her mother's hair. Her mother carried on the tradition with Harvinder. Saach Organics brings everything that is good about Indian beauty traditions to the Western market.

Products are natural and are made with herbs grown and harvested to Ayurveda traditions and are free from parabens, sulphates and petrochemicals.

The first products I've tried are the very lovely Green Tea & Aloe Vera duo - Shower Gel (200ml - £9.95)* and Hand & Body Lotion (200ml - £10.95)*

They are packed in boxes and pump action bottles making the shower gel easy to use when in the shower.  The fragrance is refreshing green tea and aloe vera with a hint of fruitiness. It's my new favourite shower gel! It leaves the skin feeling clean and fresh.

The body lotion absorbs instantly and feels really moisturising on the skin. The skin is left gently perfumed and smooth.

Love these. Pick the range up at Love Lula.
